The Bitter and the Sweet

Sorry it's been a while since I've hollered at you...this planning for the nuptials-tying business sure is time consuming...and exhausting. The past couple of weeks I've been jagged out, feeling that my to-do list far exceeds the constraints of my free time...French Polynesia, where are you, baby?

Although I was billing Good Friday as Great Friday because I had the day off of work, I did hear some news that shook my heart and soul to is foundation. The greatest rock band in the world—The Drive-By Truckers—announced that they have parted ways with Jason Isbell. Isbell was a driving force on 2/3 of that band's killer triumverate of albums—he even wrote the title tune to "Decoration Day" shortly after joining the band. In addition to penning some of the most "radio ready" tunes of the group's three songwriters, his lead-guitar skills and harmonies will be sorely missed.

I have to say that I was really upset about this for a few days. It was constantly at the forefront of my thoughts. It was like a couple that I was really close to had broken up. Fortunately, with this situation, I won't have to choose what side I still want to associate with. In a statement, DBT has said that it will co-opt long-time contributor John Neff into its lineup. And for Isbell, I'll be seeing him and his band open up for Son Volt next week.

Even though I will sorely miss seeing Isbell stage right at the DBT Rock Show, it's wonderful that he has an opportunity to share more than two or three tunes per album with my hearing ears. He's got a knack for writing literate yet catchy-as-shit tunes. Check out his myspace page (myspace.com/jasonisbell music) for the best tune about this sandblasted mess over in Iraq that I've heard. It will be on his solo album, "Sirens in the Ditch," which is set to launch in July.
